EmmyLou
EmmyLou has been adopted
|
|
EmmyLou,
aka Emmy Lou Who, is an adorable little dog who might well have
been adopted or transferred to another shelter
but for her positive heartworm status. ( Click
here for information
on heartworm.) Rescue was the only positive possible outcome for
this girl and Mosaic Rescue was happy to get her out of the shelter
and provide the treatment she needed. EmmyLou has been spayed, vaccinated
and titered (click here for information
about titers), tested and cleared for other parasites and diseases
and microchipped.
EmmyLou is a classic Mosaic in that we have no idea what breed
mix she might be. Our best bet at this point is dachshund/ rat
terrier but we're open to other suggestions. She weighs 18 lbs
and is estimated to be around 3 years old.
|
| Here's what EmmyLou's southern foster mom has to say about her:
"EmmyLou
is cute as a bug! She has little dark eyes that make it hard
to look away or ignore her - but who could do that!
She has black prick ears a little larger than her head that stand
straight up unless she is scared in which case they fold straight
back. The end of her muzzle turns up slightly which makes her even
cuter! Her little tail has been broken in at least two places causing
it to be crooked. It does not lift up like a normal canine tail
but does not seem to cause her any discomfort or get in the way.
Spunky is probably not the descriptive that will come to mind when
first meeting Emmylou as she will be scared and hesitant at first.
Her true personality blossoms once she feels secure. She's
not
a barker but she is able to speak her mind. When she
comes in from outside or if she wants something, she has a
strange
way of expressing herself. It is a cross between smack talking
and warbling like a bird. She warbles when she wants food! You
see EmmyLou is very focused on food and gobbles every meal as
if it is her last. One could say she is very food motivated and
is quite the energetic acrobat when treats are offered. The rest
of the time she is a pretty calm happy house dog. She loves treats
and to chew on Nylabones. If there are several scattered around
the house, she will gather them all together in a pile and spend
time chewing on each and every one. She does not care much for
squeaky toys. This little nugget does tend to get cold easily
and prefers to be inside as much as possible. Sweaters do not
seem to bother her.
If given the chance EmmyLou will
quickly wiggle herself into your lap on the couch or in the crook
of your arm in bed. She
does like
her crate but prefers a human bed. When your alarm clock goes off,
she is ready to get up and greet the day whether you are ready
to or not. She does not have “snooze button.”
Emmylou is a lover. She is the
queen of kisses and loves to cuddle in your lap at every opportunity.
Once settled, she is quickly
asleep and content. For now, we think that she is dreaming of her
forever family who will cherish her. She is a people dog
so would do best in a home where she could be with her human(s)
most of the time.

Mariah
Mariah has been adopted.
|
|
|
Most people
who are familiar with Mosaic Rescue will notice that Mariah doesn't
quite fit into our usual small to medium size dog category, she's
60+ lbs. We made an exception for this girl because she is an exceptional
dog (and there was some miscommunication in the beginning about
her size). Despite her physical beauty and wonderful temperament
Mariah was turned down by adopters and Rescue Waggin' (a shelter
transfer program) because she was heartworm positive. With no one
else willing to provide treatment for her we knew she needed to
come to us as so many other heartworm positive dogs have. Please click
here to read about this parasite. Mariah will have completed
her treatment, a received clean bill of health and be ready to
travel to B.C. in mid January. She has been spayed, vaccinated,
tested for other parasites and diseases and microchipped. She is
one of the first few dogs to have been tested in our new titer
program. Click here to learn about
titers.
The genetic heritage of many Mosaics can
be hard to guess but Mariah seems to be pretty much all
flat coated retriever, 'not to say there couldn't be something
else in there. She has the build and coat of the breed
and from all reports the bouncy personality as well. We
think she is about two years old.
|
Mariah has
spent the last couple of months in a multi dog and cat foster
home. Her southern foster mom says: "She fit in right from
the start, being very respectful of the cats, curious but respectful.
She and Bella, one of the cats, have become great friends and
love to groom each other. Mariah is a sweet, silly, smart, loving
dog who with a little bit of training will make the perfect companion.
And loyal, I don't think you will find a more loyal dog than
she is. She has great recall, even if the other dogs are barking
at something and I call her she will run away from them and come
to me. That is a first for me I think. Most just ignore me when
they're with the other dogs barking.
Mariah is
still young, very active and enthusiastic. She tries to be
gentle but I don't think she realizes her own strength. She
still jumps a lot but we are working on that. She wants so
much to be good, when you tell her to sit so she doesn't jump,
she sits but her whole body just quivers with her wanting to
jump and love on me.
Although Mariah is a retriever she doesn't retrieve.
If I throw something for her she starts for it and then comes
right back to me without going and getting it. She doesn't
like to be away from me at all, not even for a minute. When
we are in the yard she is right there by me at all times and
the same in the house. She does however like her toys and will
amuse herself with them in my absence. There is no problem
leaving her alone in the house when I'm out."
There are young grandchildren living in Mariah's
foster home. She loves them and has been learning to be less
boisterous around them. Because of her size and enthusiasm
we think an active adult oriented home might be best though,
one where she could get lots of one on one attention and get
to be with her humans most of the time.

The
following dogs are currently in foster care in the south.
They tested positive for heartworm and are receiving treatment.
They will be coming up once their treatment is complete
and they get a clean bill of health. Information about them will
be posted closer to their arrival time.

Hunter
We
have just discovered that in addition to having heartworm Hunter
also suffered a fractured pelvis some time in the past. We are
delighted to learn that the orthopedic surgeon recommends a femoral
head ostectomy (FHO) on his right leg but said the left one is
ok. Hunter will have the surgery once he has been treated for
heartworm. It will be a long and expensive process to get this
sweet boy healthy again but he is so worth it. Donations toward
treatment for Hunter or the other dogs in care can be made on
the "How to Help" page. |
